And when there's nothing particularly upsetting happening onscreen, there's always the set to look at. It's also fairly slow, employing languid takes that don't allow us to look away even when we'd desperately like to. Goodnight Mommy is a fairly quiet film, but that just magnifies every loud crunch, scratch, and thump. The talents in front of and behind the camera act in concert to keep us unsettled. But as they go to ever more extreme lengths to defend themselves, we start to wonder if there isn't something a little off about them too.

At first, we root for them to get to the bottom of the mystery, and to break free of the monster if necessary. On the flip side, while it's easy to sympathize with the boys' fear of their dramatically transformed mother, their own reactions don't quite sit right either. But does that make her an impostor, as the boys increasingly suspect? Or is she just a bad mother? The mother's behavior is unquestionably erratic and cruel, and the house is littered with evidence of some horrific wrong she's tried to hide. The uncertainty that lies in between grows until it becomes sickening. There's a pervasive sense that something isn't right, but little confirmation that anything is truly wrong. Goodnight Mommy relies more on uneasiness than gore or thrills. She's short on affection and quick to punish, and seems desperately jealous of her sons' closeness.

Their once-sweet mother has come back sour. The boys are understandably weirded out by her swollen, bandaged visage, but what really terrifies them is the change in her demeanor. It’s so hard to tell what will happen next as there are so many different choices that can be made and this movie doesn’t always pick the most obvious ones. When this film finally reaches its climax it truly is terrifying. The camera captures seemingly mundane things from a childlike perspective, making everything seem special and new. Now it may seem from reading this that the whole movie is buildup, anticipation and interesting cinematography. The landscapes are breathtaking and the shots use them to their best advantage. This scenery and the overall locale gives the movie a sense of surrealism and isolation. Aside from the eerie plot and the sinister atmosphere, the overall cinematography is really striking. The movie takes place in the family’s modern house in Austria surrounded by forests and corn fields. This gives these three main characters all the time they need to explore their own circumstances and for us to really get to know them. The only people in the film are the brothers and their mother aside from a few side characters that make very brief appearances. The storyline is so simple here that all the focus is put on the characters and the creation of atmosphere and suspense. I’ve mentioned before that I really enjoy bare bones plots and this is another great example to add to the list. There are so many different insights to glean from the conversations that take place and all the little nuances throughout. As the days go on and the boys become more and more certain that this interloper is not their mother they have to decide what to do next. Directors Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz masterfully build tension throughout and although there is little actually happening, there is so much going on beneath the surface. Right away something seems wrong the woman with bandages all over her face doesn’t seem anything like their mother. Goodnight Mommy is an exceedingly tense foreign language horror film about 9 year old twins, Lukas ( Lukas Schwarz Thorsteinsson) and Elias ( Elias Schwarz), whose mother (Susanne Wuest) has just returned home from plastic surgery.
